Welcome to the City Uprising Blog! We thank you for taking the time to read and learn about this journey to propel the church to prosper the city!. To the Church Partner, our hope is that you will gain an understanding of how City Uprising works and how your relationship with an urban church planter can propel the church in his city and enhance or empower your church body to live intentionally and missionally in your local community. To the church planter, our hope is that we can help you enact your City Uprising vision, supporting you in ways you can best serve your city and people. We pray that God will inspire you as you seek to find ways to display His love in your communities and ultimately make disciples in your neighborhoods.

City Uprising is a movement born out of the Gallery Church. It was birthed out of asking the question “What would this city look like if the Church came together to meet some of its biggest needs, in Jesus name?” Rooted in Jeremiah 33:9, City Uprising moved forward to“propel the church and prosper the city.”

Beginning in New York City in 2008, over 150 local and partner church volunteers came together for 4 days to serve the city. They completely rehabilitated a city park, conducted a single day HIV testing initiative, and conducted a free art show in the city’s art district. After that first year, City Uprising has grown to over 4 major cities with the participation of hundreds of volunteers from partner churches and the local community. In Baltimore alone, City Uprising has served over 4 city parks, 6 city schools, and has tested nearly 3,000 people for HIV, linking them to care and other supports. In Brooklyn, City Uprising worked for 3 days clearing the hillside of a local park to restore a view once enjoyed by local people. In New Jersey, City Uprising landscaped a woman’s yard and cleared a path so she could walk to her mailbox and cleaned up a local park. In all of these City Uprisings, the most important work accomplished by the Church was displaying God’s love through acts of selfless service and propelling the local church to prosper the city. City Uprising is now expanding to several other major U.S. cities, from New Orleans to our nation’s capital of D.C.

We believe the City is the launching pad for the gospel. City Uprising hopes to inspire resolute commitment to the local church, raise awareness of the need to reach the world’s major cities with the love and compassion of Jesus Christ through new churches, and build a bridge into the heart of the city through love and service.

We look forward to sharing the stories of City Uprisings in major cities around the U.S. and the world through this blog!

Grace and Peace,
